Returning To The Seas Of Dystopian Wars

Long-time readers will remember that many years ago (when it first came out even) I dived into Dystopian Wars by Spartan Games. In the designers words...

The year is 1870.
The World is at War.

The world of Dystopian Wars is similar to our own but subtly different. The year is 1870 and the Industrial Revolution occurred decades earlier than in our own world. Technology is far advanced, and in many cases, unrecognisable, which has led to the development of fantastic naval vessels, hulking land ships and terror from the skies in the form of airships and war balloons.

Let's recap
  • Ships
  • Cool Technology
  • Really Big Ships
  • War Balloons?
Needless to say, it ticked many boxes for me and in no time had I picked up a small pile of ships and even painted up a decent chunk of them. The story gets a little less happy from here.... over the years the designers kept making outstandingly cool models, which I of course kept buying and stashing away. Unfortunately, I never played enough games to really bed the fundamental mechanics in my head and over the course of a relatively small number of years we saw V1, then V1.1, then V2 and subsequently V2.5 of the rules published. So, with a small number of games and so many improvements to the rules happening I ended up just putting the game (and the models) on the shelf. As I said I still kept picking up models along the way (very happy to have the Ice Maiden! above right) but without a whole lot of desire to do much more.

Unfortunately the story gets even worse here as a little over a year ago Spartan Games ceased trading. I was fortunate enough over the years to have traded a number of emails with the folks at Spartan and found them to be a great bunch of passionate people. Seeing the company close the doors was an obvious loss to those of us in the community as well of course to the staff that had poured their heart and soul into the business.

So this is where the worm turns a little. Warcradle Studios (a subsidiary of Wayland Games) bought the rights to Dystopian Wars along with some of the other Spartan Games properties. On a personal level this was great as it meant that the game would continue to live on but I still had very limited reasons to play or paint my models.

And now the happy ending... (for me that is). Recently an old colleague, and once again colleague, Victor, dusted off his old ships and challenged me to a game. Armed with the "new" 2.5 edition of the rules and the Fleet Action 'fast play' version we sat down to a game one evening. The Fleet Action rules are...

...the new fast play game engine set in the world of Dystopian Wars, which will allow you to take your existing forces and, with no change to what you already own, play a faster, leaner, deadlier game of the world's leading Victorian Super Science Fiction Wargame.

I'd say it is 90% of the best bits of the game, with only 10% of the complexity. Within 90 minutes we managed to fumble our way through a small game, but we got to use our ships for the first time in probably five years. Even though the rules abstracted a number of the ship details compared with the full game, they were all different enough that the flavour of the full game seemed to still be there and most importantly, we got to use our ships!

Time to dust off the old ships and perhaps start painted up some of the backlog?

Prussian Ships Sighted!

Over the Christmas break I managed to be about as even lazy on the brushes as I get, so a few days before I was meant to head back to work I pulled out my Dystopian Wars ships that have been sitting in a part painted state for the last couple of months and hit them hard. I managed to:
  • put decals on 9 Arminius Class Frigates
  • paint and decal 6 Wachter Class Escorts
  • finish detail work and decal 6 Saxony Class Corvettes
  • paint (and decal) 3 Reiver Class Cruisers, and decal another 2
  • finish detail work and decal a Rhine Class Fleet Carrier (including a decent number of decals on the wings of the aircraft on the flight deck
  • paint and decal 3 Stolz Class Destroyers
  • last but not least, complete some last detail work on a pair of Pflicht Class Scoutships
I may need to take a little break from the rest of my ships though as I have to get a couple of armies (one FOW and one Warmachine) painted for some hard deadlines. On the positive side the remaining ships are primarily the ones that I will really enjoy painting (i.e. big ships/airships with really big guns!). I've also ordered the new Danish and Scandinavian ships to add to the fleet. I am current trying to work out a paint scheme for them that will still look Prussian, but have a little local flavour. My current thoughts are to swap the hull colours for the Danish ships, replacing the grey with black, and the black on the dazzle stripes with red. The Scandinavians will get some green added to them (probably replacing the yellow trim on the airship tails). I would like to add some of the green to the Metzger Class Robots to help tie them in as well.

In the meantime, here are some images of the latest ships to come out of drydock.

…2013, come on down!

I meant to be put this up a week ago but with a busy first Christmas with my son the holiday period disappeared quite quickly on me. So, on with the show!

2013 is going to be a bit of an odd hobby year for me. We are only holding one GT this year, so it means a little less incentive to work on some of my FOW projects (EW French, EW Soviets or anything Mid War). I am also unsure as to how many “away” games I will get in as it may be hard to get leave passes for the long weekends, although I am in preliminary discussions to head to Napier in June (good wine country down there so I can get in some gaming, and then after that we can visit some wineries!) and Wellington in August (nicest bunch of WarmaHordes players in New Zealand – sorry fellow Aucklanders, you guys are great too but they take the title). Evan is also likely to suggest I make the trip to Panzerschreck for his doubles tournament in July.

What’s the plan?
Q1 – I need to get a 42 point force painted for Ides of March and I have about 7-8 weeks to do it. I have been tossing up between expanding my Kara Sloan list by painting my Minutemen and Gun Mages, or starting my Trolls… Last night I was playing around with War Room and got excited about an eIrusk, 2 Juggernaught, 5 Man-o-War Shocktroopers, Bombardiers and Demo Corps and a small unit of Mechanics with their Officer UA. I love the MoW units (although they seem a little underwhelming on the table) and this would get me to paint them!

I also need to paint up a T-34 Battalion for a web article I am going to be working on. It means assembling and painting up 21 tanks, as well as an additional 21 turrets. Not normally a big issue but it does mean that I need to schedule my painting time well to achieve both sets of goals.

Q2 – If I am heading to NiCon it will either be WarmaHordes teams event (with Sean and Victor) or Flames Of War at a guess. In which case I will need to paint up some Trollbloods or find something that is going to inspire me with regards to Late War (not sure what periods will be on offer, but LW is a safe bet at this stage) – good chance to paint some of the new plastic PaK40s for my Hungarians as well as some Tigers I have had stashed for a rainy day!

Q3 – Call To Arms in Wellington will definitely be a WarmaHordes weekend with either the Trolls or Kara (or whatever else I end up coming up in between). Looking at my unpainted WarmaHordes figures there are quite a few units that I want to get painted and I know that a tournament is the only way to help me achieve that goal, hence all the swapping between forces.

Q4 – Finish my 1956 Israeli Tank Company! I have the tanks done, now I need to finish my artillery, add some recon and infantry. All the figures are sitting in a box at home, they just need a little paint and a lot of time. Evan is also working on a little Christmas present for me to go with this army – more details on that later.

Throughout the entire year… play some more games in general. Other than getting out to play X-Wing at TCOW in the last part of 2012 I did not play may games so the onus is on me to get the FOW and W/H stuff out of the cupboards a little more regularly. I’m also going to get my Dystopian Wars Prussians (and Allied nations) finished this year. They are quick and fun to paint so I need to stop mucking around and just get them done! I’ll also be getting my Relic Knights pre-order at some point so I should try and get some of that painted (or maybe just assembled). Last (but not least) is to work on some 1967 / 73 Syrians to go up against my Israelis.

Well, that is the 2013 plan, I already have this sinking feeling that I have bitten off more than I can chew!

Between writing this and posting it, I managed to get in two games (WarmaHordes with Tony and Napoleon at War with Wayne) and paint some Dystopian Wars stuff – the year is actually starting off according to plan!

Goodbye 2012...

It is fair to say most of us in the office at work suffer from Mike Envy, that is we are all amazed by the quantity and quality of models Mike paints over the course of a year. Sitting down tonight to a very quiet New Years Eve with my son I thought I would look back at what I have achieved through the year...

January/February - EW French. A full infantry company in time for Battlecry 2012. Waiting for the next EW tournament so that I can paint up my Somuas and Lorraine Carriers. Not looking too good with only one BF GT though...
EW French Infantry Company
March - Circle Warpwolf Stalker. A pretty quiet month on the painting front with focus being more in the direction of planning for coming events.
pKaya goes out with half the cast of Twilight?

April - Khador Iron Fang Uhlans. Another NZ Nationals has come and gone - I took my usual position of "tournament bunny".
CHARGE!
May - Iron Painter and Circle Wolds. I do love our Iron Painter events (24 hours of straight painting) even though I am a bit of a softy and end up sleeping for the last few hours. Whilst the rest of the guys were knocking out forces for Blood, Guts and Glory I was working on my Mid War (and techically EW) Soviets. I also spent a week working on my Circle Wolds in preparation for NiCon and the WarmaHordes teams tournament.
Soviets with camo?
Got Wood for Stone?

June - Tournaments. June was all about the last months furious painting efforts, so not much interest on the brush front. Both tournaments worked out well though with Baldur putting in a solid effort for me, whilst my T-26 horde managed Best Army - June was a good month!

July - Dystopian Wars. Love this game! Managed to finish off some Dystopian Wars terrain that I had been sitting on for a while. Easy to paint and looks great when finished. Guess that means I really should finish those last two islands!

We are sailing...
August -  New Miniature added! Not much to say other than that the early comments about him being a laid back little fella that enjoys sleep, food and daddy time have continued, much to my enjoyment!
Leave me alone, sleeping!
September - IKRPG. Got distracted this month by the new Iron Kingdoms RPG. Victor is going to run a game in the New Year, once the rest of us sort out our characters...
Hey Sean, so about that book?
October/November - Late War GT and 1956 Israelis? Back to the brushes to work on my LW GT army - I thought I would take something different and use Blood, Guts and Glory to field a 1956 Operation Kadesh Israeli Tank Company. It was a heck of a fun army and is definitely going to come out at another event. I just need to finish painting the "missing" platoons that I did not get a chance to do. I also found myself distracted (a lot) by the new X-Wing game by Fantasy Flight...
Flames Of War gamer in the making!

December - More X-Wing.  Pre-painted miniatures... fast game system... that was me distracted for the rest of the year!

2012 Wrap-up
3 Flames Of War armies
1 Hordes "army"
2 Warmachine/Hordes expansion packs (new things painted to add on to an existing force).
A pile of Dystopian Wars terrain.

Not a bad effort, I think I give myself a A- on the effort front. Feels like I slacked off during the second half of the year, although given the arrival of my son I think I will forgive myself. Over the next couple of days I will sit down with my wife and plan out the 2013 tournament season and from there start thinking about the painting requirements.

Have a good New Years everyone!

Prussian Month Wrap Up

Well, another month (and three weeks) have passed so I thought I would look back and check out what I achieved during Prussian Month. As it turns out.... not a lot! With the incoming arrival of my son and a fair amount of apathy, plus a mid month arrival of Dropzone Commander I managed to get very little done. I have around 35 or so ships somewhere in the process of undercoated through base coated and whilst they do not require much work once all the base colours are on it still seems to be a bit of a sticking point at the moment. Below are some "representative" images of where the fleet got to.

Gewitterwolke and Imperium Sky Fortress - almost base coated

Imperium Sky Fortress from another angle - not sure about the blue for the planes.
Gewitterwolkewith the bomb bay doors open

Rhine Class Fleet Carrier and Blücher Class Dreadnought - a long way to go on both

A selection of the other vessels - at least the masking tape part (for the black and white stripes) is over and done with.

I did get my latest order of Amera Plastics islands however. I bought a couple of their Fantasy Hills, which are made from a thicker plastic and gave me a couple of fairly flat pieces so that I could make an island airfield, as well as a small corner headland for the table. This would give us a couple of interesting terrain pieces for scenarios or just general play. I've spent a little time playing around with the arrangement of Spartan Games buildings and accessories and I think I have something that will work. Now I just need to pull out the airbrush and go to work on them. Easier said than done at the moment when painting is one of those priorities that is struggling to make its way to the top!
Industrial Headland

Headland from the top - still trying to decide if I will glue the buildings down. Makes them harder to transport but it will look better.

Island Airfield

Complete with Zeppelin Tower and Radar Station

Island Dock - this piece goes with one of the other Amera islands and fits nicely into the bay

With a couple of left over Prussian Tower guns, the ships should be safe at port.
Dystopian Legions logo - Prussian version
On other Dystopian Wars news it has been a big week or so for Spartan Games, previewing the Kingdom of Denmark fleet, as well as land forces for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth land forces, the Dominion of Canada, as well as their new campaign book Storm of Steel! I've already pre-ordered my copy... Their other bit announcement has been Dystopian Legions - 28mm gaming set in the Dystopian Wars universe. I am excited about this, but not sure if I would be so excited that I would be an adopter of the game. Mainly because I already have a pile of things to play, a larger pile of things to paint and only so much time in the week. Although the images they have put up on their site are pretty awesome so I think it is safe to say I'll invest in the rulebook if nothing else... any maybe a few figures just to have a look... and then maybe a few more....
Prussians vs the FSA (shamelessly stolen from Spartan Games website)
Well, that wraps up Prussian Month - depending on how much painting time I get over the next month or two I am planning on finishing up the islands, as well as my ship backlog. Still contemplating if I want to base my ships, still very tempted but at the same time if I don't then I am one step closer to having them finished!

Prussian Month: Dystopian Wars Islands

Alrighty, so technically a bunch of islands are not really "Prussian" but I finished them off so that I could use them with my Prussian fleet for Dystopian Wars...

Enjoy these images of a Prussian Fleet sailing amongst them.

Sunday Gaming: Battlestar Galactica and Dystopian Wars

Had a great day of Sunday Gaming today and despite turning up late (as usual) Victor and I managed to get a game of Dystopian Wars in, before settling down for a good game of Battlestar Galactica with Sean and Casey.

Initial setup, Dreadnought and Battleship up the middle
Dystopian Wars was Victors Empire of the Blazing Sun up against my Prussians. It was really a chance to see how much of the new ruleset I managed to absorb after last nights read. In terms of the update to V1.1 I really like alot of what they have done. It feels like there is alot of streamlining, but I need many more games to really get my head around the changes. I also wish I had a quick reference sheet with the model assigned rules (MARS) to help me remember what everything is. I also need to look at sorting out some tokens as we had a lot of damaged ships limping around the table. We kept the game simple and avoided anything flying, as well as too many of the optional (or what we refered to as optional) rules like morale...

Cruisers head to the left flank, enemy in the distance
As it stood my little ships accounted for themselves well cleaning out alot of Victors destroyer screen, but his cruisers then took their toll on the survivors and my battleship. Meanwhile my gunships (think guns of a battleship but speed of a cruiser) worked over his battleship with a little help. In the end we called it a draw. I think I may need to re-read the rules again and perhaps cruise the Spartan Games forum for a few extra gaming aids / FAQs etc - either way a great game and a good test drive for my new islands (I'll have more photos of them soon). Hopefully this week my last two will arrive allowing me to create an island airfield an a table-corner industrial facility for some home-brewed scenarios.

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game
Next up was BSG - the Fantasy Flight board game. If you like BSG at all, and you like board games at all, then this is a absolute MUST purchase. I've played it a dozen times now and each time is different, nail biting, back stabbing, high quality fun... and we haven't even had a single game yet using the expansions (but now Sean is hooked he will read the expansion rules and teach the rest of us!).

As they say on the site
The Board Game is an exciting game of mistrust, intrigue, and the struggle for survival which places each player in the role of one of ten of their favorite characters from the show. Each playable character has their own abilities and weaknesses, and all must work together in order for humanity to have any hope of survival. However, one or more players in every game is secretly a Cylon, and wants the humans to perish.

The basic premise is that anyone can be a Cylon, it is just luck. As a group you try to get your doomed fleet home whilst the Cylons (who many not even know they are one yet) try to stop you.

Oh really?
Short version of the game, I was everyones favourite (Baltar) and knew that I was a skin-job from the start. I spent the first half of the game hiding, counciling the other players, trying to hide my identity. Mike was playing a confusing game and even though I knew he was a human he had the rest thinking he was a toaster at heart. I changed sides with a bang and proceeded to cause trouble whilst I waited for an ally. In the end it was Casey (Adama) who revealed himself, more through accident than anything else though. In the end the Cylons plucked victory from defeat as the humans were moments away from salvation (not may humans admittedly, more than a few perished after a massive Cylon ambush).

Assuming I make it to the next Sunday Gaming session I very much hope that we roll out another game of BSG!
